About the PRBA

About the PRBA

The Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) was established in 1994 to address issues that affect the Puerto Rican community.  The founding members reasoned that as attorneys familiar with the issues of the Puerto Rican community, they could collectively be a powerful voice in the community by serving as role models, advisers, speakers and mentors.

Some past and current accomplishments…

  • The PRBA instituted a need-based scholarship program to assist Latino law students finance their law school education.  The PRBA hosts an annual scholarship awards banquet to raise funds for scholarships to be awarded to Latino law school students.
  • Each year during the Christmas season, the PRBA assembles boxes of food and gifts for children and delivers them to needy Hispanic families chosen by neighborhood charitable organizations.
  • The PRBA has been very proactive in increasing the numbers of the Hispanic judiciary.  Many members of the PRBA have been elected or appointed to judgeships during the last ten years.
  • Goals…
    1. To increase the number of scholarships and the amounts to be awarded by the PRBA to deserving Latino law students.
    1. To administer a respected evaluation process for minority judicial applicants to ensure that minority applicants appearing before the joint judicial evaluation committees are being evaluated fairly on relevant factors.
    1. To increase community involvement of the PRBA in classroom programs and holiday assistance programs.
    1. To mentor new practicing Hispanic lawyers in developing their practices and adhering to the highest standards of competence, honor, and civility when practicing law.
    1. To increase the membership involvement in the development of new programs to aid the Hispanic community.
